aBF Day 289

aBF Day 289

As luck would have it, Joel had to work this morning in Santa Clarita, the very town I'd hoped to bike to yesterday. After a stop by the donut shop in town -- busted! -- Joel helped me unload Ollie's gear and we were off. It felt good to be on the road this clear, sunny day. The hills were numerous but manageable through Soledad Canyon. What I didn't expect was the headwind: I'm heading east now, people, where's the tailwind?? I made it 42 miles before the sun started to dip behind the mountains and the temperature started to really drop.

Today marks the first time someone pretended that they weren't home and then set their dogs on me as I turned to leave. (Jerk.) His neighbor, Carl, wasn't comfortable letting me camp on the property, but gave me and Ollie a lift to the nearest town (by now it was quite dark). And $20. "Send me a postcard from somewhere pretty," he smiled, "and here's a little something to help pay for the room." With the campsite still another 10 miles or so, I caved and got myself a room at the only motel around (#8 of the trip) for many miles. Looks like I'm back in freezing night temperatures as I move into the desert climate. I'm glad I didn't mail my wool hat home yet.
